NEARLY 500 DECREASE.
THAMES POPULATION. Borough Figures Wane. COMPARISON WITH 192(1. PAEROA AND WAIHI INCREASE. Thames population has decreased during the past ten years by 482, according to the census ligates IVr the Thames borough, which were made available this morning. This month’s returns showed a total population of 42(18 compared with 4750 in 192(1. Both Paeroa and Waihi boroughs, on ihe other hand, have increased populations. A decline in the population of many North Island towns and counties is indicated by the preliminary results so far announced. Out of 85 results to hand, 27 show decreases compared with the census of ten years ago, and of these 20 are in he North Island.
If the tendency shown in these 85 returns is continued through tho whole of the returns, long-accepted theories about the “drift to tho North” may have to be revised. This ’s unlikely, however, as the intercensal estimates (based on previous ‘ensus figures and amended according to the natural increase) are generally proved fairly accurate by the final* figures, and they have indicated that population in the North Island is increasing about twice as fast as it is in the South.
