GAY CHIEF’S FATE.

FALL IN TRENTHAM RACE. Gay Chief, the two-year-old Gay Shield —Persis colt, owned and trained by Mr. F. W. Ehrhorn, ol Jlawera, fell and broke his neck during the running of the Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. His rider, P. Burgess, sustained concussion. Gay Chief was a most consistent performer. He started 15 times this season for two firsts, one second and seven thirds, lie won the Electric Handicap convincingly on the second day of the recent Te Aroha meeting.
