£25,000 Grant.

LEWIS PASS ROAD. COAST. (By Teiegrapn—Press Association). WELLINGTON, April 2.

Cabinet has approved a grant of £25,000 for the construction of the Lewis Pass Road, which links Canterbury to the West Coast, and will provide the only arterial route across the South Island. It is stated that provision for the expenditure will be made on the Estimates for next session.

The work will be carried out by the Public Works Department at public works rates of pay. Plans are now being prepared for several bridges involved in the construction of the road, including one across the Hope River. It is hoped to make a start with the work as soon as the plans have been completed.
