WOOL PRICES.

AT FEBRUARY LEVEL. Wellington Sale. KEEN COMPETITION. LOWER GRADES EASIER. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, March 21. Bidding was eager at the opening of the Wellington wool sale to-day when a total catalogue of 22,100 bales was submitted before a full attendance of buyers representative of Yorkshire, France, Germany, Japan and New Zealand. Prices were low, notwithstanding the keenness of the competition. Passings were relatively few. Yorkshire gave the strongest support, but at restricted limits. Fine hogget wool was in good demand at current rates. Examples of prices are: Southdown, 9d to 101 d and up to 12|d for superfine; halfbred, 7d to 9ld, and lambs, 7sa to BJd; fine crossbred, 6£d to 7d; medium crossbred, 5-R1 to 6£d; coarse crossbred, 42d to s|d; fine crossbred hoggets, 7|d to 9d; medium crossbred hoggets, 5d to 7d. Lambs’ wool sold at 4fd to Bjd; pieces made from 4d to sfd; crutchings, 3d to 6d. This disparity in prices is to be accounted for in a large part by the quality and condition of the wool. Quite early in the sale it appeared that prices would be about on the same level as those of the February sale. As the sale proceeded it was clear good wools of 40’s to 50’s were very firm and fully equal to February values, and lower grades were from Jd to id down. Japan was an onlooker. Canada was in the market for the better Romney wools, and in keen competition for them with Bradford. Franco was an eager buyer of pieces and bellies. Crutchings were keenly competed for at id better than February rates. The general opinion of brokers inclines to the view that the market is better than' was anticipated.
