LIFE SAVED BY TRAMWAYMEN

(By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND,. March 6.

Dazed by smoke, a Chinese named' Ching narroAvly escaped Avith his life from a bedroom over his blazing fruit shop in Ponsonby this morning.

The motorman and conductor of a passing tramcar noticed smoke coming from the shop. They stopped the tram and banged on the door to rouse the occupant.

Ching was almost overcome by the smoke, but groped his Avay doAvnstairs and managed to open the door, falling into the street. He said he realised his life had been saved by the prompt action of the traimvaymen.
