THAMES COMMITTEE. TOTAL OF 403 ON ROLL. SMALL CREDIT BALANCE. The Thames Unemployment Committee met last evening. Present: Messrs. S. Ensor (chairman), D. Mackay, H. Crawford, W. J. Boswell, S. Smith, and the secretary, Mr. A. Chapman. An apology was received from Mr. C. S. Donovan. Men on Borough Work. The Thames Borough Council foreman reported on the work allotted to relief workers under No. 5 scheme and those employed on borough works. At the present time there were 89 men engaged. Financial Statement. The treasurer, Mr. A. Chapman, tabled a financial statement as from June 8, 1933, to November 5, 1934, which showed the committee to be in credit to the extent of £79/19/5. On the motion of Mr. Ensor, it was agreed that the levy of 3d. per head made on local bodies employing unemployed be discontinued as from November 1, and until such time as the committee finds it necessary to reinstate the charge. It was the opinion of members that it was unnecessary to build up a big surplus, as long as enough money was in sight. # Mr. S. Smith, certifying officer, reported that the unemployed men registered in Thames as at November 2 wore allocated as follows: —Gold prospecting 173, borough 105, County Council 55, High School 10, Lands and Survey Department, 60; total, 403. Mr. Smith remarked that therewas a demand for farm labour, and it was encouraging to see several farmers employing merr without the subsidy.
