Endeavour won the first race for the America Cup from Rainbow by a margin of 2 minutes 11 seconds superiority on the run home, After a poor start, which caused her to trail Rainbow by 21 seconds to the windward mark, Endeavour, in a demonstration of fine sailing qualities and expert seamanship by her skipper and crew, made the run home in spectacular fashion against an obviously fast opponent. Endeavour's victory was. only the fourth British triumph in 41 races in the 15 series «overing a period of 83 years.

Mr. Vanderbilt, Rainbow's captain, had outmanoeuvred Mr. T. 0. M, Sopwith on the 15-mile windward leg of the 30-mile course, but with the wind astern, the Britisher began to close the gap, and almost 30 minutes after passing the first mark Endeavour went into a short lead, which she consistently increased. The start of the race was delayed 10 minutes as Endeavour fouled her mainsail and was given a short postponement. Rainbow was away two seconds ahead of her rival, which had to luff to clear the committee fcoat and lost way." While the breeze seldom reached eight knots on Saturday, to-day the yachts raced in a 16-knot wind that fell somewhat but freshened again to 13. ■' "* i ■" : / PREVIOUS CUP WINNERS. There have been fourteen contests tor the famous Cup, for which British yachtsmen have spent many millions in vain attempts to regain it. The following table gives the par; ticulars of each race. In every contest the American-owned boat, which is given first, has been the winner. Aurora was not a challenger in the ifirst race, but she finished second. |The owners were the challengers, the defending yacht being usually owned by a syndicate of members of tho New York Yacht Club:—
