IMPROVEMENT IN THAMES. Unemployed Figures Decline. TRADES NOW BUSIER. TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT? . - . ■■ A general improvement in business seems to have affected Thames during the last few 1 weeks, and it is particularly pleasing to note that additional hands have been taken on at Messrs. A. and G. Price's foundry. Nearly 80 men are employed there at the present time, and this will naturally improve the general outlook. Mr. William Price states that he can ascribe no particular reason to the increase of orders, nor can he say whether the improvement will last for any considerable time. The Hauraki Clothing Factory also engaged a number of additional workers last week, Mr. F. H. Claxton stating that in his opinion the increase of orders would extend operations for some time. He considered that the improvement was not temporary, but would be maintained. Building And Allied Trades. Carpenters and painters have also been fairly busy during the past few weeks with repairs and renovations. Several buildings have been demolished, including a large shop in Pollen Street old Building Society office in Grahamstown. Th borough abattoir at Parawai and the Fishermen's Co-op. Ltd.'s freezing works have been re-painted. Fewer Unemployed. The registration figures for unemployed in the Thames district have decreased during .the year. In January the number o£ registrations was 658, and this decreased gradually till May, when it fluctuated only slightly. The present figure is 589. The certifying , .officer, Mr. S. Smith, could give no particular reason for the decrease, but added that the number could, be expected to rise in the near future when several camp schemes were completed.
