“Not On Your Life!”
MR. FORBES’ FIRM REFUSAL. CIVIL SERVANTS’ RIGHTS. REPLY TO RAILWAYMEN. (Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 16 A definite refusal to repeal the section of the Finance Act dealing Avith the subversive conduct of public servants was given to a deputation from the A.S.R.S. by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, yesterday. : . ;x
Mr Forbes said the Government had taken only the same right under the section as that enjoyed by a private employer. A request Avas also made by tho deputation for the according of full civil rights to public servants along the lines of the Bill introduced by the late Mr Massey in 1920. Mr Forbes expressed the view that it would -be ’impracticable to make such a provision. If public servants participated actively in politics the Minister might have to deal with officers opposed to him politically, and it would be impossible to Avork on friendly terms with men avlio might wish to turn the Government out.
