LITTLE ALARM CAUSED. DAMAGE AT OPOTIKI. The following Press Association messages have been received in connection with the earthquake:— Dannevirke. > — About 1.25 a.m. Southern Hawke's Bay was shaken by a prolonged earthquake, which conhmed for upwards of a minute, and apparently came from the usual direction, north-east. Houses rattled vigorously, but there was little alarm and no damage occurred. Waipukurau.—Shocks of earthquake, prolonged for about a minute, were experienced at 1.27 this morning, and again at 2.15. They were marked by a steady swaying movement, apparently from east to est. No damage occurred. Most people were awakened by the first shock, Avhich was the worst. Opotiki.—Two severe earthquakes and other minor ones were experienced here early this morning. Many chimneys are down. The electricity supply failed about 1.30 a.m. Rotorua. —The earthquake shock was only felt very slightly in Rotorua and slightly heavier at Taupo. Wellington.—The P. and T. Department reports that Wairoa has lost all contact by lines to the north owing to a break in the cable crossing the Wairoa River in the township.
