AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 12 Inquiries made to-day concerning the conference in Wellington be-" fcween the coal miners of the West Coast and the owners to discuss the employers' final proposals in the present industrial dispute, revealed that the meeting resulted in a deadlock, and no agreement was reached. As far as could be ascertained, the position appeared to bo that no statement would be issued until after the workers' delegates had had the opportunity of reporting to their Unions. The companies represented at the conference were: Wes'tport, West-port-Stockton, Brunner and Grey Valley.

The Conciliation Council, which considered the application by the employers in the iron trade, completely failed to reach an agreement, and the existing award will in consequence lapse.
