WITH THE GALLOPERS.

ELLERSLIE MINOR EVENTS

Prospects of Candidates.

CHANCES OF LOCAL HORSES

NOTES BY “CANARD”

Though there are actually no locally-trained horses engaged in the

major events at Ellerslie, several are .entered in the minor, races, and may give good accounts of v themselves.

In the Jervois Handicap, Searcher .(Dufty), Free Air (Donaldson), Hiata (Dufty), Snow Lap (Deeble), and Roxy (owned in Coromandel), are engaged, whilst Werata will represent the Winder stable in the Members’ Handicap. With the possible exception of Searcher, who went a bit short the other morning, each of these should give decent showings in their respective events, and the later days of the meeting may see a bit of stake money come locally.

The first race is the first division of the Jervois Handicap, and even with divisions, there are 25 engaged in this. Lord Val, with all his 9.2, is a real 7fur. horse, and Beacon Fire should go well. Princess Bede was only just beaten at Te Rapa, and Royal Survey is going well. Ruby Dawn runs well at Ellerslie, and Royal Gallant may run a good seven. Brackets, of course, will complicate

things, but amongst the fancied may be Lord Val, Beacon Fire, Princess Bede, Lyrical, Ruby Dawn, Royal Survey, Royal Gallant, Ruling King, Catch’em, Free Air, Kanapa and Glenrata. The best of these may be: Royal Survey Lord Val Princess Bede from:— JERVOIS HANDICAP, of £225. Seven furlongs. First Division. Lord Val 9.2, Beacon Fire 9.0, Grand Spirit 8.10, Princess Bede, Ruby Dawn 8.6, Lyrical 8.5, Royal Survey 8.2, Lady Spy 7.12, Glenrata 7.9, Searcher 7.5, Royal Gallant 7.1, Ruling King, Abbey Dream, Catch’em, Dark Marble, Free Air, Golondrina, Kanapa, Moonfleet, Marshland, .On Approval, Princess Star, Radiant Sun, Toujours, Vilma 7.0.

The Green Lane Steeplechase is next, with Claremore (11.2) at the head of affairs. He is also in the Great Northern Hurdles, as is Nas-

sock, and neither may start.,lf started, Claremore should be handiest, with Nassock as his closest attendant, but Dominican gave enough promise in his initial run over the Ellerslie country to be mentioned. Monetize will be better suited by the battens, whilst Apache should not be forgotten, for he has won over country and at the distance. Carlaris reads best of the rest, but, given a start, it looks like: Claremore Nassock Dominican. In the event of atiy being absent, Apache should come into favour, from: GREEN LANE STEEPLES, of £225. About 21 miles. Claremore 11.2, Nassock 10.5, Monetize 10.0, Jen 9.13, Apache 9.12, Dark Night, Carlaris, Dominican 9.0.

The second division of the Jervois Handicap follows, and there is just as big a puzzle here. InTatnint should run well, but may take on the Cornwall Handicap, whilst Gay Court is working nicely. Holly Holm appeals, as does Woodfull. If Hiata (who appears touched in the wind) were right, he would go Well, whilst Teels is hard to understand. Puss Moth is nicely placed and weighted, and Snow Lap is the likeliest of the locals. It is a real hard race to weigh up, but the issue may incude: Holly Holm Puss. Moth Woodfull Snow Lap might go particularly well, from: — Second Division! Imamint 8.13, Valueless 8.7, Gay Court S.G, Seneschal 8.5, Holly Holm 8.4, Woodfull 8.2, Hiata 7.12, Night Guard 7.9, Alpina 7.7, Teels 7.4, Last Lap 7.1, Abbey Queen, Black Marlin, Delrain, Echo Song, Glcnhaupo, Irish Chieftain, Lady Vane, Mahkill, Miss Albyn, Pus s Moth, Roxy, Snow Lap, Toplight, Wishbone 7.0. Cruachan heads th e Penrose Hurdles list with 11.8, and has to give Paddon a stone. I doubt if he can, though he is a good one. Neil is an improving lepper, as is Patutahi, but Biform appeals more than either. Of the rest, Full Measuic, High Commissioner and Taramoa may run well, the best seeming to be: Biform Paddon High Commissioner from: PENROSE HURDLES, of £225. One mile and three-quarters. Cruachan 11.8, . Paddon,-.Neil 10.8, Balloon 10.6, Patutafii, Arch Eagle 10.5, Biform 10.1, Cargen 9.13, Fernden 9.12, Appledore, st. Ames 9.8, Sports King, Te Homai, High Commissioner 9.7, Taramoa 9.3, Arcade 9.1, Blue Bonnett, Full Measure 9.0. The Hunt Club Hurdles usually sees more on the ground than on the top, but amongst those which have shown a bit of form are Town Beauty, Mashoor, Royal Visitor, Cat-i-mes (commonly called “Catsmeat”), Val Simon and General Lu. It a race in •which anything might (and usually does) happen, but public choice may include: Royal Visitor Cat-i-mes Town Beauty from:

HUNT CLUB HURDLES, of £2OO. Two miles. Town Beauty, Maslioor 9.8, Royal Visitor, Cat-i-mes 9.7, General Lu 9.4, Royal Reign 9.2, Val Simon 9.1, Dark Night, Haakon, Thespis, Consort, Arapawa, Tapapa, Paris Model, Clontarf Bill 9.0. The >Members’ Handicap ends one day’s trouble, and the fellow (or lady) who can pick It in one deserves ..the divvie, sure. Despite his mess-up at Te Rapa, Chromadyne is going to be hard, but Hampton Park, King Ford, Tradesman, Silvermine,- Psychologist and Miladi will not let him' have it all his own way, and the issue is as 1 open as the mouth of a dbg. Gold Money must be considered,, and Refresher has points in his-'favour. A wild' shot in the dark says; * Chromadyne !f. '‘ ( Silvermine Hampton Park from: MEMBERS' HANDICAP, of £350. Six furlongs. Huntingdon, Consent 9.2, Silvermine 8.4, Tradesman 8.1, Refresher 8.0, Gold Money 7.12, Chromadyne 7.11, Manawhenua, The Tiger 7.9, White Fang, Hampton Park 7.5, King Ford 7.3, Baroscope, Miladi 7.1, Lucy Rose, Royal Bengal, Werata, Psychologist, Prince of Orange 7.0. .
