KING’S BIRTHDAY.

HOLIDAY FIXTURES.

Rugby at Rhodes’ Park.

BASKETBALL AT CENTRAL.

RACING AT ELLERSLIE

There is any amount of food for sports-loving people in and around I hames during the holiday to-morrow, for representative. Rugby and basketball fixtures will be played, and, for the devotees of the Turf, there are races at Ellerslie, where the Great Northerns will be decided.

Rugby at Rhodes Park.

The annual fixture, Thames v. Auckland, is due to be contested at Rhodes Park to-morrow, when a very strong Auckland B (little inferior t 5 the A), will try conclusions with the local reps. These, in view of their decisive victory over Plains, are in great heart, and, with more promising backs in the team, are likely to give a good account of themselves. Mr E. Griffin referees the game. The two teams are:—

THAMES. Fullback: B. Harrison. Threequarters: H. Wayne, T.'Dufty, R. Dovell. Five-eighths: W. Bell, J. Ake. Half: W. Donaldson. Back Row: J. Gordon. Middle Row: W. Pollock, J. Strange, A, Bailey, G. Pollock. Front Row: G. Percy, C. Abraham, K. Strange. Emergencies: B. McDonald, W. Geary; W. Savage, J. Arthur. AUCKLAND. Fullback: Butler. Threequarters: Morgan, Wales, Clark. Five-eighths: Townsend, R. Stuart. Halfback: Frankham. Front Row: Souter, Johnson, Benjamin . Second Row: Stacey, Locke. Back Row: Potter, Brown, McDonald. Reserves:—Backs: Turei, Conway; forwards: McMiken, Fraser. The curtain-raiser is just the type of football which serves to whet the appetite of fans for sterner stuff. Secondary school game is the fare, Thames High School v. Ngatea District High School, and though the local school is numerically stronger,

it does not follow that they will have it their own way with the sturdy lads from the butter-lands. Mr F. Vedder will do the adjudicating.

Teams for Saturday

Rugby will be continued on Saturday, the first round of the competitions concluding with the match, College Old Boys v. P.T. Both clubs are fielding strong teams, and interesting Rugby should be witnessed. Teams are:—■ College Old Boys (senior).—R. Billing, W. Kelly, W. Savage, H. Wayne, W. Bell, AV. Donaldson, C. Billing, A. McConnell, G. Percy (captain), R. McDonald, W. Geary, J. Connolly, A. Bailey, T. Russell, C. Campbell W. Percy. College Old Boys (junior) .-Con-, nors, Stirling, Howe, R. Court, D. Court, Mcßae, Billing, Donnelly, Goodwin, Thorn, Gibson, Smith, Barbalich, White, F. Barbalich, Challis, Murray, Price and Wilton. Basketball Reps, in Action. In addition to the national game for men, New Zealand is steadily tending toward making basketball the national game for girls, and here the game is in a flourishing condition. ThamesHauraki Association has a number of teams to pick from, and Auckland is sending down a team to-mor-row to fulfill the first .of the regular home-and-home fixtures. This game will be played on the Central School courts, and should prove interesting and exciting. Thames, which puts up a good fight on its home court, is to be represented by the following players:

Attack: Misses M. Finan, J. Mulcahy, M. Comer ((C.O.G). Centre: Misses E. O’Meara (C.0.G.), J. Hobbis (Baptist), E. Robinson (C.0.G.).

Defence: Misses Madge Thorpe (Kopu), D. Brown, G. Lanning (C.0.G.). j

Emergencies: Misses B. Moore, W. Graham, M. Taylor.

No Hockey Fixtures.

Unfortunately there are no rep. hockey fixtures available for the public to watch, since efforts to obtain

vists from Tauranga and other centres have proved unavailing. Mt. Eden, the mainstays of visits to Thames, were unable to send a team, and hockey enthusiasts will perforce have to patronise some other branch of sport. After Feathered Game. Many of tho shooters will find this day an excellent opportunity for airing their licences, and parties are already made up to traverse many of the back-country areas in search of pheasant, quail and (in the suitable localities), duck. Fur and feather are fairly plentiful this season, and sportsmen are now reaping the benefit of several closed seasons. Duck will be more likely to be close, due to the two heavy frosts, whilst fur is sure to be on the move for the same reason. Hunting. At Maramarua, followers of “Nimrod” (incidentally, he 'would turn in his grave to be associated with harriers), will have the opportunity of turning out with the new pack established there by Mr Fagan. There are plenty of hares available, and the ( young draft from several packs, from which the Maramarua kennels have oeen filled, have twice shown good noses and feathering. The main difficulty seems to be in the lack of suitable hunters, and this will take some time to right. Taken all in all, there is plenty for all sports to do.
