The Longest Way Round. Quite a number of people when they read in the Herald about the ashes from Chilean volcanoes being carried to New Zealand doubtless looked at an atlas and estimated the distance that the ashes must have travelled. If they reckoned this distance to be (RiOO miles, the approximate shortest distance between NZ. and S. America, they were wrong, for the ashes, owing to the prevailing air currents, travelled the other way, a distance of quite 12,000 miles. No reports ( of the effects of the volcanic dust in the atmosphere. have been received as yet from Australia, which country would be affected by the cloud before New Zealand. But possibly Australia'is father far north of the line taken ”b'y the cloud. The effect of the dust in the high regions of the atmosphere wad again visible last night at and! after sunset.
