Stand-down Week.

CONFERENCE ARRANGED. MAYORS OF THE DISTRICT. The apparent injustice to country unemployed, as against the city man, is the stand-down week, and feeling in the country districts is running rather high in consequence. A conference of the Mayors of Thames, Paeroa, Waihi and ’Te Aroha will be held at Paeroa on Monday next, to go fully into the position and to see if it is possible to do anything to alter the Government’s proposals. In the country towns the unemployed have had to carry on without the help of the Hospital and Charitable aid that is given in the cities and thus secure better treatment. Various committees are working in the town to assist unemployed, and schemes are being formulated to procure stock for meat, firewood and clothing. A drive ’will be made on May 18 (next Wednesday), to augment supplies. It is hoped that the conference of Mayors will do much towards eliminating the stand-down week.
