MONDAY, JULY 20, 1931. OVERSEAS TRADE FIGURES.
"With malice towards none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right."—Lincoln.
An encouraging feature of the Dominion's overseas trade figures, published recently, is the very considerable improvement in the visible trade balance during the past 12 months. Although the decline in export values ..amounted to £lO,643,236, the fall, in import values was no less than £15,454,401, a favourable movement of £4,811,165. The reduction of imports from 48 to 33 millions " represents a national economy of something like 33 1/3 per cent. This is a satisfying response to the call for a curtailment o_f expenditure which, if maintained, should have beneficial results in various ways, not the least of these being a corrsponding adjustment of exchange rates. Th,e fall in prices is being successfully countered by the only means possible, namely, economies on the part of individual citizens, who now have a practical demonstration of the favourable reaction upon the nation's financial position of personal selfdenial.
