COROMANDEL NEWS

NO. 5 SCHEME.

GOOD WORK DONE BY UNEMPLOYED.

The Coromandel County has benefited to a large extent by work done by unemployed under the No. 5 Scheme. There are iabout 90 men now working under this system, and it can well be understood that besides benefiting the County and helping a large percentage of the people through a trying winter the wages, which amount roughly to £l4O per week, circulating through the community, cannot but help to mitigate to a fair extent financial difficulties.

For several weeks previous to last week gangs of men were taken out by lorry to the Thames main highway for two days a week to repair that road. Last week during the heavy rains several bad slips on the Manaia Hill and some minor ones oh the Kereta Hill came down, making it necessary to transfer a 'gang from the quarry to clean the road sufficiently for motor traffic and prevent the water coursing down the middle of the road.

When work resumes next week a big gang is to be taken out to the main hisrhway for two days a week for the next three working weeks, to clear the water tables properly and repair what remains of the damage done by the slips. Good work was done last week by a gang of .unemployed oh the Whansrapoua Hill;, clearinsr off small slip's and faking off corners.

THE SCHOOL. The No. 5 Scheme has also been of benefit to the district school, where a gang has been at work putting the gravel part of the playarround down in asphalt, putting up new concrete posts and pipes, railin? fence and a new crate. They have also tidied up thejrrounds eeosiderablv and p'dled down an old shed, which has been rather an eyesore to the nublic for vears.
