FIVE MINUTES' GALE.
DAMAGE AT OAMARU. Thunder and Lightning. A GARAGE UNROOFED. ,ELECTRIC WIRES DOWN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OAMARU, July 17 At 5.50 this morning the Oamaru district experienced a severe gale, almost of hurricane force. It lasted only five minutes, but was sufficient to do enough damage to make it clear it would have been serious had it lasted much longer. It began with a thunderclap and a vivid lightning flash. 'Several houses had their tiles blown off. Electric wires in some places were blown down and the roof of a garage crashed oil to the roof of a house at Waireka, and took way. half the roof of the house. The wreckage was strewed over a paddock.
A tree, which is a feature of the 17th hole at the golf links, was blown down.
No other details of damage are yet available.
GRANDSTAND UNROOFED.
(By Telegraph—Press Associations GREYMOUTH, July 17 Boisterous weather early this morning caused damage estimated at £2OO to the roof of the Trotting Club's grandstand, a portion being blown across the track.
