MYSTERIOUS TELEGRAM.
READ AT A MEETING
DENIAL THAT IT WAS SENT.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association) WESTPORT, July 17
Considerable mystery surrounds the telegram read at the Denniston Miners'' Union meeting jm Wednesday night, stating that the watersiders had been instructed to lift the embargo on the Cascade and Charing Creek coal. Following a denial in the morning papers by Mr Roberts, of the Alliance of Labour, that a telegram had been sent, exhaustive enquiries were made.
This morning several who attended the Union meeting state definitely that the telegram was read by Mr A. Wathy, president of the Union, and the telegram was received by Mr Hayward. Mr Hayward flatly denies receiving the telegram. An official of the Union neither confirms nor denies the telegram was received. Other Union officials refuse to dsicuss the matter.
From enquiries' made there is no doubt a telegram was received, as reported yesterday. There is no fresh development on the waterfront, there being no response to a call for labour.
