SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1931. THE POOR HELP THE POOR.
"With malice towards none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right."—Lincoln.
When acknowledging in the House the "splendid national spirit" evinced by all classes in dealing with the present unemployment and distress, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart remarked that "the poor have helped the poor to a remarkable degree," at which Mr Langstone interjected: "Isn't it time the rich helped them?" That was an ungracious thing to say, and an unfair thing. There are_very few of the so-called rich, in this country who find it easy at present to carry their responsihilties and meet their obligations. The people sneered at by the Labour member for Waimarino have been hit heavily by taxation,, their income from investments or land seriously-reduced, and in spite of these and various other handicaps have given voluntarily, generously, and unostentatiously to funds for relieving distress not only from un employment but also from the earthquake disaster. At a time like this, when the call is for team work, and all concerned should be pulling their weight, there should be no setting of class against class. No particular section has a monopoly of humanitarian feeling.
