Hikutaia Opens Season.

IN GOOD WEATHER

A REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING.

There was a large attendance of bowling, tennis and croquet enthusiasts at the Alley Memorial Park, Hikutaw, on Saturday, when the season was officially opened,. The greens were in excellent order and a very enjoyable .afternoon was spent. The pleasure of the afternoon was enhanced by a fine- musical programme provided by the Turua Boys' Band, under the able conductors hip of Mr. L. Henwcod.

Mr. E. Elliot, president of the Hikutaia Bowling Club extended] a cordial welcome to the visitors and hoped they would all enjoy their visit to Hikutaia and would find the greens to their satisfaction. He pointed out that the park was' given by Mr. W. Alley as a memorial to the brave men of the district who gave their lives in the Great War, and it was the intention of the committee to make it as beautiful as possible as funds permitted. He was pleased to announce that several new members had joined for the coming season. m. He assured all visiting • bowlepra that there was always a hearty welcome awaiting' them on the green whenever they came to Hikutaia. He also expressed the committee's deep appreciation' of the large amount of voluntary labour given by Mr. Reid, the green superintendent, to whom the credit of the fine state of the green was largely due. .He then asked Mrs. Elliot to throw the jack and Mr. W. Alley, the donor of the park, to bowl the first bowl, which was done amidst applause. Teams were then selected representing the president and the yice-president, and play commenced. At the finish of the games it was found that the president had been, successful by five points. The following are the scores, the president's teams being named first: Lowry, Fowler, Taylor, Griffin 13; Weadon, Strange, Alexander, Gibb 20. Andrews, Forrest, Dunstan, Clark 16; Watson, Nicholson, Southberg, Marsh 19. Borthwick, McAra, Chamberlain, Elliot 19; Dale, Pilkington Murphy, W. Taylor 11. Lowry, McCullough, Palmer, Franklin 25; Onley, Brown, Chamberlain, Heathcote 17. Labarre, Carter, Buchan, Collins 36; Dunstan, Gilpin, Yates, Can' 15. Henry, McPherson, McLaren J McDermott 18; Palmer, Wilson, Clark, Kristovich 23. Hawthorn, Naylor, Mettam, Lorrimer 14; Collinson, Morrison, Pascoe, Smith 19. Lewis, Dare, Pinder, Keatley 19; Borthwick, Rosenfelt, Simpsoii, Winder 27. Before leaving, expressions of thanks for the hospitality extended were given by Messrs L. Gibb (Paeroa). P. Heathcote (Te Aroha), L. Griffin (Thames), Rev. Palmer (Katikati), J. Smith (Helensville), J. McDermott (Waihi), and R. Southberg all speakers referring to the excellent state of the jgreen^ Tennis Club. After the bowling green had been declared open, all present adjourned to the tennis courts, where Mr. V. Young welcomed the visiting players and hoped the club would enjoy anotrer successful season. Last season the club's "A" team had been successful it winning the Howell Williams Shield,. While the "B" team had lost the final game for the Mills Cup. He was pleased to announce that several new members had joined this season. Lately two popular members of the club had joined the matrimonial ranks and he had much pleasure in asking Mrs. Elliot, on behalf of her daughter, Mrs. R. White, to accept a set of Royal Doulton after tea plates, and Mr. Howard Morrison a pipe as a mark of the esteem of the members. Both presentations were greeted with applause. Mrs. Young then hit the first ball over the net and the president declared the courts opened for the sea<son. Teams were then arranged and play was kept up till dark. Croquet Club. Mr. E. Elliot, on behalf of Mrs. W. Alley, president of the Ladies' Croquet Club, welcomed the ladies to the official opening of the green and hoped they would have a most successful season. He then asked Mrs. Alley to hit the first ball and declared the season opened. Matches were then arranged and an enjoyable afternoon was spent.

THAMES GREEN. PRATT RETATNS BADGES. Although a number of players were attending the official opening of the Hikutaia Club, many members of the Thames Club turned up for play onSaturday. ;; % The contest for the Memorial Badges resulted in the holders, Knox, Hoskiug, Shaud, and Pratt retaining the trophies against Mutton, Graham, Murray, and G. The following South Auckland teams will assemble on the Ponsonby Club's green at 9 a.m. to-morrow, December 2, to play in the Hardley Shield match (skips' names first in each case): — The Thanies representatives are Adamson, Clark, Newman, and Wallace. Stewart, Crabbe, Oates, Banks. Adamson, Frost, Baker, Wallace. Clarke, Simpson, Clevely, Ferguson. W. J. North., James, Land, Rabone. Metcalfe, Crawshaw, Hollard, T. B. Booth. Livingstone, Pearce, Donald, Yardley. Paterson, Darlington, Prickett, Andrews. The South Auckand executive will make their headquarters at the Albert Hotel, in Auckland. On Wednesday, the teams will assemble at the Pukekohe Hotel at 12.30 midday, where they will be the guests of the Northern Waikato Association at lunch. Plav will commence at 2 p.m.
