PROTEST AGAINST TAXES.

FARMERS DISSATISFIED. WANT LANDS DE-RATED. (Special to Star.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. A protest was entered by the Auckland executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, at its monthly meeting, against the recent increases in taxation, particularly in' regard to tariffs on necessities. “Instead of putting their own house in order, the Government has increased taxation on necessities,” said Mr. R. Feisst. The farmer was facing depression by economising and increasing the efficiency with which he carried out his every-dav operations. The Government should adopt similar tactics and increase the efficiency of its administration. He moved that the executive express the strongest possible condemnation of the recent increases in the protective Customs taxation upon necessities, believing that such can have no other results than to still further increase the burdens upon industry. The motion was carried. The executive further resolved to emnhatically protest against the using of the increased petrol-tax for any other purpose than for the derating of farm lands, particularly in regard to the maintenance of backcountry roads.
