MEN’S SOCIETY.

MONTHLY MEETING. AN EXCELLENT EVENING. The second evening of St. George’s Men’s Society was held at the Parish Hall yesterday, when a good attendance of members listened to a programme prepared by Mr W. H. Baker, who was chairman for the evening.

A vote of condolence was carried in silence to Mr A. .E. Court on the death of his wife, the chairman making feeling reference to the sad occurrence.

Mr C. R. Cooke, on behalf of Mr H. E. Tonge, presented the Society with a gavel in fhe shape of a mere mere. This is a very fine bit of workmanship carried out by Mr Tonge. The handle is inlaid with pawa shell, and later Mr Tonge will further carve a Maori design on the blade. j

The chairman moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr Tonge for his generosity. This ivas carried with acclamation.

The following programme wtfs given:— Songs, Messrs Samuel, Johnstone and Beech; violin solos, Mr Dickson. The accompanist was Mr Barras Gleeson.

A very interesting address was given by Mr J. H. Adams on petroleum, its formation and the geology of the place in which it is found. Mr Adams gave several personal reminiscences of his woyk on the geological survey for oil in the Gisborne district. Mr F. McCullough spoke on “Empire Press,” giving a history of its inception 21 years ago, and touching on the work of the recent conference in London. Mr W. B. Teasdale was elected chairman for the next meeting, which will be held early in September. Mr Teasdale said one of the features of his evening would be an exhibition of curios, and asked all present to bring an article, curious or otherwise, and give the history of it. A similar exhibition was given some years ago at a men’s society meeting, and a most interesting collection ' was on view. This item alone will make the evening attractive.
