A sailor can usually be depended upon for a good story and captain S. R. Middleton, D. 5.0., RJN., was quite equal to the occasion when replying to the toast of “The Navy” at the Second Army Brigade, New Zealand Field Artillery,, reunion. He related how a young subaltern was sitting for an examination at H'ome, and one of the questions asked 1 him was the function of cavalry in war. The answer he gave was this: “To lend a tone to what would be a vulgar brawl.” It was some time before the laughter subsided.
