Governor Addresses Growers
RECORD EXPORT FIGURES. UNIFORM QUALITY NEEDED; (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 2. An optimistic note with regard to the future of the fruit-growing industry in New Zealand was struck by the Governor-General, speaking at the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation to-day. His Excellency referred to some of the problems confronting fruitgrowers, but pointed out that there were other factors which should inspire New Zealand fruitgrowers with (Considerable confidence. Incidentallv he Urged growers to cultivate optimism with the same zeal that they cultivated fruit. He also stressed the importance of the maintenance of a uniform standard of quality and soundness in the export fruit.
He warmly congratulated New Zealand and its growers on having achieved this season a record fruit export of 1,334,600 cases of hard fruit, of which 1,275,000 cases consisted of apples, and on having obtained for its produce, unlike many other producers of this country, an average price per ease which should leave the growers an appre.icable margin of profit, without any drain upon the national finances ih implementing the Government’s gross guarantee of 11/-.per case.'
