ON EDGE OF PRECIPICE.

PERILOUS MOTOR SMASH. While travelling with her daughter to Kashmir, Lady Birdwood, wife of Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood, Commander-in-chief in India, exper-ienced-a narrow escape from death. They were motoring up a step gradient; with a 1000 ft. drop on one side of the road, when turning the corner, they were confronted by a car coming down. There was no room for the vehicles to pass each other, and both drivers jammed on their brakes. The brakes of the descending car failed to act and the vehicles met in a head-on crash. Only the fact that Lady Birdwood's car was heavily laden saved it from being hurled down the cliffside. Lady Birdwood and her daughter were unhurt, but somewhat shaken by their experience.
