WHANGAMATA ROAD.
MR. SAMUEL OBTAINS GRANT.

. COUNTY TO FIND £SO. TOTAL COST OF £450. It will be remembered that the heavy rain last week completely carried away a large portion of road between Whangamata and Waihi and leaving the former district isolated. The following telegram was sent by Mr. Williams, secretary of the Settlers' Association to Mr. Samuel, M.F. :_ "Road between Whangamata and Waihi washed out on Long Hill and is impassable for traffic. Public Works disclaims responsbility for, repair and st" teg Obinemuri Cp'untv is responsible. Please refer to Minister letter number three four nine six, eight, dated April 4, addressed to you, where it states that the Department retains responsibility until ~ end of February, 1931." -"', ... -. ; £:, . Mr. Samuel lost no time; He immediately got in touch with the'. Min inter, afid sent the following telegram to Mr. Williamson:— • "Your telegram received. _ ;Am ins terviewing Minister of Public Works immediately, suggesting co operation between his Department and Forestry, : and drawing his attention ;tpv terms of: his letter addressed to me on April 4, wherein he" stated that the Department retains responsibility until end of February, 1931.- ' Hope to be able to accomplish something and let you, have reply not later than Monday next.". ■ ; • That be was successful in his mis- '■ sion is shown by the receipt •. last evening of the' following telegram, which explains itself: — "With further reference' to the Whangamata road repairs, the recent flood damage is estimated at £460 as; follows: Over .the whoie of the Public 1 ; Works section £350, and on portion already controlled by the Ohmemuri County Council at the Waihi-; end,,, £IOO. I have arranged with I 'the Minister for the Department to pay th> whole of the .cost J of the Public Works section, and £SO of the! cost of the Waihi end controlled by the County, provided the County .finds the other £SO.
