The vicinity of the Manawatu Gorge is a lure of industry at present. The new bridge has been started and a number of men are employed on making approaches to it. Many ■ .rough 'cottages are being erected to house the workmen. The old bridge has been unsafe for heavy traffic fof some considerable time, gates having been erected at each end, allow one car on. the bridge at a time. A''man is -in charge and operates day and night. ' . An old fallacy has been revived in Christchurch, that there would be more jobs if everyone worked shorter hours. Of course this proposition would be sound if there was a fixed amount of work to do. Unfortunately this is not the case. People have work done if they can afford it and that depends a good deal on the price of labour. If it is made dearer by shorter hours and go-slow, then of neces* sity less labour would be hired and there would be less jobs instead ot' more. The way to make more jobs is to give good value for labour, so that, men will be in demand; so that, in fact, it will pay to hire labour. The Same applies to goods in which labour generally represents the greatest part of the costs. If these can be' produced cheaper through the more \ efficient services of the workers, more i people will be able to buy the goods, | there will be a • greater demand for! labour to make them, and more J jobs. , . .
