THE PRICE OF CRIME

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Aug. 31.

In the Supreme Court, Henry JYlackay, described by the Justice as

.a sexual pervert and a menace to .society,* was sentenced to five years’ .impi'isonment for indecently assault-

ing a boy. Another prisoner, William Henry dleye, characterised 'by the Judge as .•a dangerous man, was sentenced to four years’ for carnal knowledge.

Frederick James Harvey was sentenced to four years, and Hotene Rehutai to five years on charges of invest.

Ani Tarapa (23), a Maori woman with five young children, who pleaded rguilty to two charges of arson, was ordered to come up for sentence when •called on.

Rawiri Whrehunfl and Taiera Pokai, for breaking and entering the Tuaroa "Trading Company’s store, pleaded guilty. The former was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and the latter to 18 months’ reformative detention.

PREVALENCE OF BURGLARY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 31. Yesterday, in the Supreme Court, Reginald Eugene Seager, who pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking, ■entering and theft in business places In Hawera and stealing goods and money to the value of £2O, was sentenced to two years’ on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.

The Chief Justice said that such eases were becotning rife, not only in this district, but all over the country, and courts must do their best to put them down.

“PEEPING TOMS” GAOLED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 31. Three months’ hard labour was the sentence imposed on John Taylor McDougall, alias McDonald (35). a labourer. and John Hamilton, alias Howell, alias Woodcock (39),' a labourer, who were charged in the Magistrate’s Court that on August 29 they were found without lawful excuse on enclosed premises of ,21 Bealey Avenue.

The police stated that the accused had alarmed three women by peering through a window at night.
