THE COUNTY’S DECISION.
That the Waiomo proposal was only turned down by 175 votes to 212 bears witness that a good deal of sympathy and interest was shown throughout the County in the Borough’s endeavour to secure the last spot left on the Coast as a recreation and picnic reserve. The astonishing thing is the way in which Tapu, Puru and a certain number of County ratepayers at Thames voted against the proposal, a thing that is quite inexplicable. It was expected an adverse vote would be made across the range and at Puriri and Hikutaia, but even these are not as heavy as anticipated. A little more propaganda could have turned the scale in favour of the reserve, but perhaps it was felt that the decision was a foregone conclusion and it was useless to fight the opposition. The result shows that it was by no means a lost cause, and had those supporting it realised the fact, they could have organised and won the day. However, it is now too late to do anything, save to hope that the County will later on reconsider the matter.
