FAMINE IN CHINA.
AN APPEAL FAILS. VERY FEW DONATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Pre3a Association.) WELLINGTON, March 27. The appeal in aid of the China famine is not meeting with much response, only £172 having been subscribed so far. At a meeting convened by the Mayor a committee was appointed to collect subscriptions, and it was also decided to wait on the Government. One enthusiastic speaker thought the Prime Minister should be asked for £50,000, but thiSiwas at once strongly deprecated.
