FAREWELL TO MR. A. D. McLEOD
"WHITEST & STRAIGHTEST" MAN "PROUD TO CALL HIM FRIEND." (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CARTERTON, Mar. 27. A very representative and enthusiastic gathering was held at Martinborough Town Hall last night to bid farewell to the Hon. A. D. and Mrs McLeod, who are leaving next week on an extended tour abroad. The Mayor of Martinborough, Mr W. BMartin, presided. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, during his speech, described Mr McLeod as one of the whitest and straightest of men, one whom he was proud to call his friend. During his work while he held the portfolio of Minister, he had shown the greatest confidence and insight, and had meted out justice to all impartially. Anything he had done would stand the severest scrutiny of any man, or group of men, • in the Dominion. Had he continued in office the speaker "ftas sure he would have pointed out a sane and sure land settlement policy. This was not to be, however. He wished both Mr and Mrs McLeod. the best of happiness on their?trip, a speedy recovery to health and a quick return to public life in New Zealand. Mr McLeod, in rising to reply, was vociferously applauded. H e thanked one and all from the bottom of his h'eart. A signal honour had been done both to himself and Mrs McLeod. Mr and Mrs McLeod sail from Wel-s lington on April 4.
