THE LURE OF GOLD.

MR. NEWDICK WILL MINE AGAIN. AREA NEAR THE WAIOTAHI. That he intended to seek for a little of the old-time gold was the reason given by a former I‘esident ol Waihi (Mr John Newdick), who has taken up a piece of ground, comprising about 20 acres, within half a mils of the one-time famous Waiotahi claim at Thames. For the past 40 years this particular area, looked on with favour by all old-timers, has been locked up and was only quite recently thrown open and automatically made available for prospecting. One day last week one of the very early pioneers of the Thames gold held in the person of Mr Alfred Newdick, father of Mr J. Newdick, and Mr Jack George, also an oldtime miner and bandsman of Waihi in the early days of the town, accompanied by Mr J. Newdick, paid a visit of inspection to the claim. Mr Newdick, senr., who is in his 85th. year, and Mr George, who is fen years younger, traversed a considerable area of ground with which in their younger days they were more or less familiar, and from past experiences were able to impart some xiseful information in connection with the work which will he undertaken on the property. The claim, which will he known as the Luxall, is regarded as a distinctly promising piece of ground, and the first step will he to put in a drive about 200 ft. “just to see”—as Newdick, juhr., said—“if we can get a little of the old-time gold.”
