AN ANCIENT GAME.
Evidence that a game similar to squash was played by natives of Yucatan 2000 vears ago was found by a Tulane University expedition which has just returned. . home after exploring more than six months in Central America and Mexico. Frans Blom, Tulane’s Department of Middle American Research, who headed the expedition, said he found courts upon which the game had been played by the ancient Mayan tribes. The game apparently had been played with rubber balls which had been knocked back and forth with something similar to racquets. Heretofore, Mr. Blom explained, it had been thought that such games were not played in that section earlier than 1000 or 1200.
The expedition travelled through almost impenetrable jungles a large part of the time. Seventy days were required to hack their way through underbrush for 100 miles, and at another time the expedition travelled only 350 feet in 11 days. Textiles 1200 to 1500 years old were found in a cave, Mr. Blom said; the cloth was still white and could not be torn without great difficulty.
