RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

FIVE IN THREE MONTHS

INQUIRIES ASKED FOR

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) .. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 11. Under the heading “Findings Wanted,” the Lyttelton Times, in an editorial, says: “The derailment of trains in the Dominion has figured prominently during the last few months. Fortunately the mishaps have not been attended with loss of life, but tho fact that five trains- have been derailed in the past three monhs must occasion the railway authorities some concern, and the general public cannot be expected to view these happenings with equanimity. In one instance at least the loss sustained must have been considerable and the interruption of services must not only have been very inconvenient to the travelling public. but also must have adversely at fectcd the already diminished revenue of the Railway Department. “Public confidence is, of course, an essential to the successful operation of tho services, and for that, if for no other reason, the Departmental authorities should make a clear statement as to the causes of these mishaps. We assume that each and every accident is made the subject of the closest inquiry, and the findings should be made public, otherwise rumour, with its many distortions, will have full play. The technical aspects may be uppermost in the minds of the authorities, hut they should not overlook the fact that in order to re-assur© the public they must make it as clear a« a full inquiry will permit just how these accidents happened.”
