THE HOUSE ADJOURNS.

READY FOR THE FIGHT.

GOOD WISHES EXPRESSED.

(By 'Telegraph.—Press' 'Associatibn.') WELLINGTON, Oct, 11. It was midnight when the House finally adjourned on Tuesday. Election refrence-; could not ho excluded from final speeches. The Premier led off with the cheerful hope that members would enjoy the election period. There would be plenty of hard knocks, and. of course,, some casualties. “You! cannot get into a battle without someone getting hurt, win nr lose,” added Mr. Coates. Members would, continue their friendship outside Parliament, because there were friendships which counted much more than the partisan spirit which had to be good adclmin istrat£on in New Zealand.

“I hope every member will come back if lie deserves it, 4’ was Mr. H. E. Holland’s brief but pertinent reference. After all, lie added, the fight was not of persons, hut a conflict of ideals, and that was the proper plane on which to conduct it.

Sir Joseph Ward genially asked the Prime Minister to realise that in the conflict ahead, if he lost a few political chips, and the speaker gained some,, they could meet next season on kindly terms, and he also reminded the other side of the house that sometimes “the first shall he last, and the last the first.” (Laughter.) He extended his good wishes to the Premier privately, which was a« much as he could do. (Laughter.)
