A FIRE ON. ’CHANGE.
SATURDAY NIGHT’S BLAZE.
FIRE PLUGS COVERED.
BRIGADE SUBDUES FLAMES. The ringing of the fire-bells broke up many pleasant little social gatherings on Saturday evening, and the Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade turned out in force to find the old Stock Exchange building at the corner of Albert and Davy Street alight at the back.
The Brigade, after vainly searching for plugs at the corner, which were buried beneath the surface of the road, got a lead on at the next plug and soon subdued the flames.
There was a good muster of firemen, under Superintendent A. Garrett, and the Brigade and engine were on the scene in remarkably quick time. The fire wag discovered by Constable A. White, who noticed smoke issuing from the roof. One of the largest crowds ever seen in the street since it was known as “Scrip Corner,” assembled, but soon resumed their ordinary evening’s avocations when it was seen that the fire was under control.
