INTERMEDIATE CREDITS.
SPEECH BY THE PREMIER.
(Special.—Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. Speaking at Turiwiri and Ruawai last night, Mr Coates explained the legislation passed last session for the benefit of the farming community. The petrol tax, he said, would provide money for the maintenance of subsidiary main highways, giving relief to country settlers. It was estimated that the petrol tax would add another £4 per car to the cost of running. Farmers would have to make quarterly xeturns for' refunds, though it would probably be found that they would not make application when they found the roads so much improved. The intermediate credit scheme would some into operation early this year, making it possible for the farmer to secure money from 6 to 6?; per cent. A district superintendent and local committee would supervise the spending of the moneys of the scheme.
