CANCER TREATMENT.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS. ■— — ' ' ■ ' ' ■'■ DOCTOR ADVISES CAUTION. FORMULA,- HANDED*. OVER, A new development in the cancer problem in Australia is predicted by Dr G- W. F. Paul, of Queensland, who ';. has returned from London, after study- , ing Professor Blair-Bell's new metallic lead treatment. •, Professor Blair-Bell claims from 15. to 20- per cent, cures in his treatment of malignant cancer. ' ' • Dr Paul was commissioned by the., Queensland Government to study: can- ':. cer treatment, and'obtain, if possible, Y Professor Blair-Bell's remedy. He brought back with him sufficient to treat 50 patients. It is to be used .. Brisbane hospitals. .Dr Paul, thinks it is likely that the Government will now appoint a cancer research committee for Queensland. / V; According to Dr Paul, the tendency among medical men in England to-day is to attribute the cause of cancer to an external -virus, probably an insectborne parasite. ■"-»."' The discovery that metallic lead had :: the power of destroying young cells when injected intra-venously, was '.'. made by Professor Blair-Bell in 1922. His first case was «t person suffeiftng ; from cancer of ithe breast. It. was stated that a cure.was effected. Since then the professor had been using the ,J treatment in different forms.
' The present method of manufacture, | however, is new, the professor having discarded the original formula. The treatment is also being used ; with some success at Birmingham Hospital, by Dr Thompson, and at a , special cancer Ward at Stj Bartholo- . mew's- Hospital, London.' ■ t ;' :?
Until a few months ago. the prp- r . 1; fessor refused to divulge the method -• of manufacture, on the ground., that only specially trained ; medical men with laboratory and chemical experience, could safely use it. A few months ago he handed over the formula to a firm of manufacture, ing chemists, who are ' now making Y ithe remedy according to ; the formula, '■,.'• Dr Paul stated that the cost b£ the material used in the course of ment of a patient was under £lo.' Although Dr Paul saw cases in Birmingham Hospital that . had ' evidently. been cured by the treatment, he pointed out that it is still, in its experimen-' tal stage. He advises caution until the; v treatment had been .well, tried here, and results forthcoming. '-. x
