THE Thames Star.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 1928. UNWELCOME WEATHER.

“With malice towards none; with chaijity for all; 1 with firmneea in the right, as God gives Us to see the right.”— Lincoln!

The, Northern Hemisphere is having a very severe winter,, and the floods that are hound to set in with the thaw in England may cause great distress and loss of life. But the present bad winter- was very clearly predicted because of the abnormal summer. The only year in the last century that afflicted the southern half of England and Wales with a wetter summer than 1927 was 1879, and in that year, as in 1927, there Was a sudden change of abnormally dry weather in October. iSo close was the parallel between the two years that the possibility of the present severe winter immediately suggested itself. ‘There is no reason to suppose that the English climate is undergoing any progressive change, and although old records show that for five_ centuries severe winters have been decidedly less frequent than mild ones, there is bound to be an occasional swing of the pendulum and that is what, is happening at present. If New Zealand follows England in its weather variations, there is a prospect that the present wet summer will be followed by. a very cold winter. Indeed, the terrific cold wave that is afflicting the Northern Hemisphere at present bodes ill for the Southern Hemisphere in the coming winter.
