JUMP FOR SAFETY.

PERIL IN BURNING SHOP. A recent message from Toowoomba, Queensland, states that five persons .had a very narrow escape from being burned to death when a fire destroyed a two-storey shop and dwelling, occupied by J- Horn, newsagent and stationer. Mrs Horn was awakened by smoke and flames. She woke her husband, who tried to reach the shop to inform the fire brigade, but found that the only means of access to the shop, a wooden staircase, was a mass of flame. Rushing back, Mr Horn found the other four occupants of the house awake, and huddled together on a small balcony, which overhangs the street. By climbing on to the balcony of a neighbouring cafe, a drop of about 10ft., the party managed, with g difficulty, to reach safety.
