BOROUGH COUNCH. MEETS.
RESIDENT FIELDS OFFICER. PROPOSAL SUPPORTED. , The fortnightly meeting of the Thames Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr W. Bongard, presiding. Crs. H. R. Bush, S. C Muir, C. W. Potterton, A. G. Bryan, R. Cox, C. S. Donovan, J. Morley, W. J. Cropp, and Messrs A. Chapman (town clerk), and J. E. Anderson (Borough engineer) were also present. An apology for non-attendance was tendered by Cr S. Ensor. Correspondence. Mr James Kernick, secretary of the Thames High School Board of Governors, wrote to the effect that, in view of the unsatisfactory working of the meter registering water consumed at the High School, it was requested that all water charges in connection with the School be written off to March 31, the charge thereafter to be in terms of the Council's amended -by-law. The St. Francis' School Committee also wrote requesting in regard to the St. Francis* Catholic School, that the extraordinary water-supply rate be remitted, on the grounds that such rate would impose a hardship on the parents of the pupils attending there—the parents. of whom were already being charged this extra rate on their behalf.
It was decided in both cases that the extraordinary -rates be remitted. Chamber of Commerce Proposal.
The secretary of the Thames Chamber of Commerce (Mr Jas. Kernick) wrote asking for the assistance of the Council in urging favourable consideration of an application made by the Chamber to the Hon. 0.. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, for'the appointment of a resident fields officer to represent, the Agricultural Department in the districts of : the Thames. Valley and Hauraki Plains. The. necessity for, expert advice in the development of the areas referred to, and the inter-relation of the prosperity of these districts with would be evident to the Council, and the Chamber felt ihat the, importance, of the request made warranted every effort on the part of those representing both town and country, in urging favourable consideration. His Worship ' remarked that no doubt the support of the Department iii stationing such an officer in the Thames, district would prove of infinite benefit. He moved that the Council should give hearty co-operation in regard to the matter, and that the Minister of Agriculture be approached with a : request,to instal such an officer in the district, with his headquarters presumably /at Thames. The motion was seconded by Cr Potterton and carried unanimously. ' '-'Messrs C. Neal and B. E.. Crosbie were granted an application to construct* a common sewer on their property in Franklin Street, subject to tli4 work being carried out in accordance with, the, engineer's sanction. Messrs C S. Gunn and J.. H. Lange were granted similar applications.
