SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

AT PUBLIC BATHS. A GREAT SUCCESS. RESULTS OF CONTESTS,

Seating and standing room was taxed

to .the utmost last evening- at the Public Baths, when the first swimming carnival of the year -was held. The warm evening was conductive to much pleasure, and the crowd took great interest in all the events. The arrangements were admirably carried out by the committee, and no delay was caused in getting off the ftevents. '

The judges for the swimming events were Messrs H. Crawford and H. R. Denize. The children’s diving was judged by Messrs G. L. Shaw and G. Buchan, and the men’s and women’s diving by Messrs Crawford and Denize. Mr Delamore acted as starter, and the timing was in the hands of Mr Irwin. Mr P. Jenldn made a most efficient M.C.

The amusing event of the evening was the men’s blindfold race, in which there were 16 starters. They were very crowded at the start, but those contestants with some pace soon shot ahead, but most of them fouled each other and lost their direction. Two swimmers made direct for the side of the Baths, and, arriving there in good time, evidently considered they had won. Another competitor, the winner, must have thought he had to return over the course he had just covered, and became entangled in the rope that runs parallel to the sides of the Baths. The judge’s had hard work to find the winner in the men’s diving competition, several entrants being recalled three times to repeat their perform-, ance.

The energetic secretary, Miss O’Donnell, and her helpers are to he congratulated on the success of the carnival, which was the best and most lucerative yet seen at the Baths. '.The results are:
