TRADE REGULATIONS. The fourth annual report of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board sets forth a great deal of information concerning the meat industry of the Dominion, and the excellent work the Board has accomplished. It has kept a watchful eye upon the product from the time it left the farm as live stock and reached the consumer in the British market. There tfill be few who will be inclined to argue that the establishment of the Board has not been fully justified. There were those who, upon its inauguration, prophesied that it was doomed to failure, but its success has silenced its critics, and the Dominion’s meat business is in a more satisfactory condition to-day because of its exertions than it would otherwise have been. There have been adverse conditions; these could not have been obviated, but their effect has been minimised to an appreciable degree to the advantage of the producer. The report refers to the advantage of systematic feeding of the London market in the stabilisation of prices, and quotes Sir P. Cunliffe Lister, President of the Board of Trade, and others, as being in sympathy with the policy. If these advantages have accrued to the meat industry, why should not equally satisfactory results be obtained if the same policy is applied to the dairying business? The Dairy Produce Control Board purposes adopting the same policy as the Meat Board; yet it is being seriously contended that what has practically saved the one will ruin the other. The contention does not carry conviction. The fact discounts the theory.—Waikato Times.
