THE PEACOCK’S SHRIEK.

“LTTvE AN ENGINE.” NEIGHBOURS’ COMPLAINT. '"‘Robert cTß.""Smith, of the Grange, Eccles. Lancashire, was fined 10/- at the Police Court for having failed to abate a nuisance which neighbours alleged was created by his peacock. It was stated that the bird’s shri.ek was worse than the worst motor horn, and it whistled like a locomotive steam engine from 4 in the morning till 11 at night during the summer months, preventing neighbours from obtaining rest. Other residents stated that thev had got used to the shrieks, while Smith told the Magistrates that he went to considerable expense to obtain the peacock, thinking that the bird would be an attraction and add to the amenities of the district. A peacock, he stated, called only during the spring months of the year, and any cause there might have been for complaint was removed when a mate was obtained. A search of law records on his behalf had failed to find a single instance of a peacock being held to be a nuisance.
