HOSPITAL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. MONEY BY DEBENTURES. routine business. The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital Board was held yesterday, W. E. Hale presiding over Messrs. J. W. Danby, G. Death, Robinson, P. E. Brenan, C. W. Kennedy, W. J. Ijlal], H. L. Bernev, J. Lange and J. W. Rowe. . The Secretary (Mr. G. Tonge) was also in attendance. Loan Money. The Bank of New Zealand wrote with reference to the Board’s application for the purpose of erecting an isolation ward and laundry at a cost of £7OOO, and advising that it would he necessary to lodge debentures as security for the overdraft. There should ho 10 debentures of €7OO each, payable 10 years hence, rate of interest 65- per cent., supported hv the Board’s undertaking to levy on contributing local bodies for an amount sufficient with the relative subsidy to produce €7OO each year for the ensuing 10 years, and consent of the Minister of Health to the Board borrowing and giving the required security.

The Chairman said the proposition from the Bank appealed to a greater extent than that of the Public Trustee. He moved that the offer he accepted/ and the Secretary take the necessary-: steps to raise the money. ; This was seconded and'carried. | A suggestion from Mr. Danby that a committee he appointed to gain detailed information regarding the proposed buildings was favourably Tre* 3 ceived, and the Chairman and "Messrs. Danby, Rowe, Lange and Brenan were , appointed. V Gift of Books. -j The Thames Borough Council wrote in reply to the request for any. books v of no further use to the Public Library would bo acceptable to the inmates of the district homes, and stating that, the Council would be pleased to refer i.( the matter to a library committee to ascertain if there were any such hooka available. , y.

Mr. Danby reported acceptance of 30 or 40 volumes from Mrs. Stevenson. 1 - - .. A vote of appreciation was accorded t the donor. Hospital Farm. | The Health Department forwarded a report, on .the hospital farm by their agricultural adviser. After being discussed in committee, the report was held over until next meeting, pending receipt of a report from the farm manager. j Sewerage Connections. The Thames Borough Council wrote advising that the sewerage was now ready for connection, and requesting the Board to connect up within. 2X days. Mi-. Danby suggested getting the advice of the health authorities before tenders were called for the necessary work.—Carried.

Vacancies in Sanatoria. The Health Department advised that “ there were 66 vacant beds at the Pukeora Sanatorium, and 42 beds at Queen Mary’s Hospital, , Hanrner ; Springs.—Received. Waihi Deputation. The Waihi Hospital Board wrote . , asking the Thames Board to receive a deputation to discuss hospital matters.

The Waihi Board also wrote advising that it could not accept the first resolution contained in the Thames Board’s letter of July 14th, but was prepared to accept the second one. With reference to the proposed conference of the two Boards, it could not be arranged by the Waihi Board for the 14th instant, hut that some future' ' date would be acceptable.

A j voice: I don’t suppose we can ; do anything more with them.'' | Thp Chairman intimated, that the Board would only be* too pleased to -k meet the members of the Waihi Board at any time. \ Replying to Mr. Dauby, the Secretary stated that the Waihi Board had religiously complied with the demand of the Board for full information regarding urgent cases from the Thames area admitted to the Waihi Hospital. \ Mr. Death said it seemed to him that the Waihi Board was not bothering very seriously about the collection of certain fees. Mr. Dauby favoured the keeping of separate accounts from Waihi patients. The Chairman reminded members ; that the outpard correspondence would." • show that every possible effort was ‘ being made to obtain payment of fees. Resignation. ... Dr. F. R. Smale wrote resigning his ' position as assistant house surgepn, to take effect as from September 15th\ It was decided to accept the resigna-v----tion with regret. There was a short discussion as i*o what should be a stipulated time for a surgeon’s term of service. Two members opined that* in four years’ time it would he practically impossible to obtain house surgeons. It was decided to “wait till the difficulty came” The appointment of Dr. Edginton as assistant .house surgeon for a period of three months was confirmed.
