Keen competition between the shipbuilding firm of Philander, of Lubeck, and the British Company of Vickers is reported by the Temps correspondee* at Constantinople in connection with the Turkish plan for re-conditioning the German battleship Goeben, transferred to the Turkish flag just before Turkey entered the war. The Goeben, damaged by striking a mine, has for six years been lying as a bulk in Stenia Bay (on the Bosphorus, eight miles from Constantinople.)Tlio British firm it is stated, offered to bring a floating dock from Malta. The Germans abo built the Goeben, asserted their ability to provide the same thing, !>ut asked for ten days’ extension of which to make a definite tender, which was accorded. The German engineers estimate that the work of repairing the Goeben will t. kc eighteo i months and employ 1500 men.
