TO THE RESCUE.

> , ANOTHER LABOUR DEFEAT.

LIBERALS PANIC-STRICKEN.

VOTE FOR QUESTION AT ISSUE.

(A, & N.Z. Cable.) f LONDON, July 1.

The Government defeat in the House -of Commons.ds the seventh since the starred. Directly the result was anno'unced, the Liberals, panicstricken at the possibility of,, the Government’s resignation, rushed to the rescue, and the Government a majority of 68.

; The question at jssue was the liability of performances for charity to pay entertainment tax, the House voting their exemption, but it is doubtful if the' Liberals would have voted if they had realised the consequences. The Liberals want an early election even less than the Labourites. In any case, the point was- 1 of trifling importance,, only £IOO,OOO revenue being in question.
