AXEMEN’S CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. GOOD ATTENDANCE. A grand axemen’s carnival, promoted in the interests ol‘ the Thames Rugby Union, eventuated on Saturday last in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, nearly 1000 people paying l'or admittance to the grounds. The officials worked hard to make the day a pleasant and interesting one, in which they thoroughly succeeded. In the chopping events, Mr A. Alley acted as judge, and Mr M. Ellis as starter. The assistant starter was Mr \Y. C. Cossgrove, rite timekeeper, Mr IV. H. Hoult, call stewards, Messrs. P. -Jenkin and •!. Sprnggon. In the athletic items the judges were .Messrs. W. H. Baker. 11. Crawford and L. Alexander: starter. Mr Fleming; timekeeper. \Y. -T. Irwin. The secretary was Mr E. 0. Much interest was taken' in the Fire Brigade event for the Peddie Cup championship. It was a oneman coupling event, and therb were some eight entries. ‘The result was: A. Fleming 1, P. Jenkin 2, A. Bateman 3. Time: 50 2,55.
