ACCIDENT ON RAILWAY.
MAORI SERIOUSLY INJURED. •
The special Te Aroha train wass stopped along the line in the direction o'f Thames South, bje tween 7 and S ‘o’clock last night, waen_,ihe fireman, Mr T. 'Genres, noticed on object, being pushed out from, under the engine. On making an examination the engine driver, .Mr Garrick Little, and the fireman, were surprised and shocked to And Nuku Merriman, a Maori, locally well known, had been run over. Two of his fingers had been severed, and his hand badly mutilated. The injured man was placed in the guard’s van and brought to the Thames station, where he was met by an ambulance and conveyed, to the hospital. Inquiries at the hospital elicited the information that .Merriman is in rather a serious condition, several ribs having been broken and his lungs punctured. The injury to his hand necessitated the lower third of his arm being amputated. From what can be gathered, Nuku Merriman was on his way home, and had used the railway as a short cut.
